In diatoms, the holes collectively take on the role of a sieve, a two-way filtration mechanism across which water and nutrient molecules permeate the cell. The holes can range from several micrometres down to 100 nanometres in diameter. A typical diatom frustule is perforated rather than solid, for two reasons.
Radiolaria: Life History and Ecology. Many species of Radiolaria inhabit masses of ocean water, and occupy faunal niches or biographical zones comparable with other zooplankton. Radiolarian species are non-motile; they drift along water currents while those currents compartmentalize the ocean into finer ecological domains.

Radiolaria are unicellular holoplanktonic protozoa with siliceous or strontium sulfate skeletons. Mainly studied by micropaleontologists because of their excellent fossil record, they are also key

Vertical distribution of different groups of radiolarians and mesozooplankton (I = 0.2-3.0 mm) and the contribution of radiolarians to total biomass of bathometer-sampled zooplankton were studied in the epipelagic West Pacific Rise and the Gulf of California during 49th cruise of R/V "Akademik Mstislav Keldysh" (September-October, 2003).

Radiolarians are classified among the Protista, a large and eclectic group of eukaryotic microbiota including the algae and protozoa. Algae are photosynthetic, single-celled protists, while the protozoa obtain food by feeding on other organisms or absorbing dissolved organic matter from their environment.
Competition between diatoms and radiolarians for dissolved silica is suspected to be the cause of an observed decrease in the average weight of radiolarian skeletons during the Cenozoic. Only warm-water sphere Radiolaria showed this loss in weight; cold-water sphere groups did not, lending support to the idea that only those groups, in ecological contact with diatoms were affected. To assess the relationship of radiolarian production, species distribution in water and surface sediment to water-mass characteristics, biological productivity and export regimes in the Sea of Okhotsk (SOk) we accomplished a quantitative analysis of radiolarian assemblages obtained from 35 surface-sediment samples and 115 plankton samples recording the radiolarian depth distribution in the ABSTRACT. This paper presents a review of the current knowledge on the identification and distribution of Recent polycystine Radiolaria so far recorded, or presumed to occur, in the South Atlantic Ocean (0° to 60°S, from the South American coasts to the coasts of Africa).
