The town was established in 1845 following the discovery of copper and the subsequent opening of the Cliff copper mine by the Pittsburgh and Boston Mining company. On April 8, 2016, First Mining completed a business combination transaction with Clifton Star Resources Inc. to acquire a 100% interest in the Duquesne Gold Project and a 10% interest in the Duparquet Gold Project. Almost 140 years ago, rich copper deposits were discovered in a canyon by the Metcalf brothers and mined by recruits from Mexico. The Morenci-Clifton district eventually became one of the largest copper producers in the world. Like many mining towns, Morenci was located on extremely steep terrain, not the usual place a town site would be located. However, when thousands of laborers converge on a rich deposit, a city is born nonetheless.

Chloride is a bit different from the rest of the mining towns in this list, in that it didn’t come about as a result of a gold rush. The town was founded in 1863 as a response to the silver findings during the 1840s at a site called “Silver Hill”.
